John L. Buono, Executive Director of the State Dormitory Authority, was elected as the new Chairperson of the Capital District Regional Planning Commission (CDRPC) at the January 23rd Board meeting of the four-county planning agency. Buono was formerly Rensselaer County Executive and has been a CDRPC member since 1980. He succeeded Ralph N. Comanzo, Majority Leader of the Schenectady County Legislature.
Also elected to officer positions were: 1st Vice Chairman - Henry Dennis, Jr. of Albany County, 2nd Vice Chairman - Rod Sutton of Saratoga County, and Treasurer - Peter Polsinelli of Schenectady County. All four officers will serve for a one year term.
"I'm very pleased and honored to serve as the Chairman of this premier regional organization," said Buono. "More people are now aware of the needs and benefits of regional cooperation. I'm glad to see one of the CDRPC-sponsored regional projects being implemented - the construction of the 16-bed Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility. It will prove that the Capital District municipalities can work together if a joint project makes economic sense and will save taxpayers money," continued Buono.
The Commission will celebrate its 30th Anniversary this coming September. Created jointly by the four counties in 1967, CDRPC has undertaken various regional studies and provided planning and support services such as economic development planning and assistance, Foreign-Trade Zone maintenance, Canal Recreationway revitalization, transportation planning, watershed and water resources protection, juvenile delinquency prevention, and demographic projections.
The Commission serves as the regional data center for Census and economic information. It also provides technical assistance to municipalities in preparing local master plans and land use regulations.
