CDRPC Elects New Officers

J. Christopher Callaghan, Saratoga County Treasurer, was elected the Chairman of the Capital District Regional Planning Commission (CDRPC) during the February 20th board meeting of the 4-county regional agency at its headquarters in Colonie.

Also elected were Dave Vincent of Schenectady County as 1st Vice Chairman; Hudson Valley Community College’s President, John Buono, as 2nd Vice Chairman; and former Albany Mayor, Thomas Whalen, as Treasurer. The Commission has twenty board members.

“I am very pleased and honored to serve as the Chairman of this regional organization,” said Callaghan. “There are many common development issues facing individual communities that can be better resolved through regional approach. The Commission provides a good forum to promote regional cooperation and to forge joint programs,” continued Callaghan.

Established jointly by the counties of Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady in 1967, CDRPC has conducted various regional studies on land use, solid wastes disposal, watershed protection, economic development, canal recreationway planning, juvenile delinquency prevention, and demographic trends and projections.

The Commission also received an authorization from the Federal Foreign-Trade Zones Board as the “Grantee” to oversee Foreign-Trade Zone #121 with jurisdictional boundaries covering ten counties.

In 1997, CDRPC was instrumental in constructing the 24-bed Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility, a successful model of inter-municipal cooperative project which has received national recognition.

CDRPC serves as the regional data center for Census demographic and economic information. It also provides technical assistance to municipalities in preparing local master plans and to school districts for enrollment projections.
