James Shaughnessy, member of the Capital District Regional Planning Commission since 2003, was elected and installed as the new Chair of the four-county regional body at the agency’s December 19th meeting held at the Commission’s offices off Wolf Road. Mr. Shaughnessy is a professionally licensed structural engineer who has worked in both the public and private sectors. A resident of Schodack and graduate of RPI, Mr. Shaughnessy previously served on the Rensselaer County Sewer District Board of Commissioners and the Town of Brunswick Zoning Board of Appeals. He succeeds Willard Bruce as chair.
Other Officers installed at the meeting were Commissioner John (Jack) Murray as Vice Chair; Commissioner Gary Hughes as Secretary; and Commissioner Lucille McKnight as Treasurer. All officers serve a one-year term.
CDRPC was established jointly by the counties of Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady in 1967. Its mission is to promote sound and coordinated land use, economic development, and healthy environments within the Capital Region through various studies, plans, and policy recommendations.
The Commission is also charged with carrying out regional projects that serve the common interests of member counties and their municipalities, such as the 16-bed Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility located in the Town of Colonie and the administration of the Combined Sewer Overflow project in Albany and Rensselaer counties.
The regional data bank created and maintained by the Commission is the central source for demographic and economic data for the Region and its municipalities, much of which is available to the public through the Commission’s Web Site ( http://cdrpc.org ).
