Individual Actions
What you can do today:
Turn It Off
- Turn off lights and computers when not in use.
- Unplug chargers for battery-powered devices between uses.
- Unplug appliances or electronics with standby, remote control or digital clocks when not in use.
- Unplug the extra refrigerator/freezer (plug it back in for the party).
Use Less
- Set thermostat to 78° in summer, 68° in winter.
- Close shades or blinds in summer.
- Wash clothes in cold or warm water, not hot.
- Bake several dishes together, and don’t preheat the oven.
- Run the dishwasher only when full, and don’t use heat-dry.
- Recycle and reuse everything you can — trash pickup and trash disposal release CO2.
- Give each member of your household responsibility for one energy-saving action.
Invest a Little, Save a Lot
- Switch to fluorescent light bulbs or the newer LED lighting.
- Use caulk, weatherstripping and interior plastic storm windows.
- Check equipment labels, and choose low standby-power consumption.
- Choose clean power. To find out how, check with the NYS Public Service Commission.
- Purchase Energy Star appliances, furnaces and other equipment.
- Get an energy audit; find out how at http://www.getenergysmart.org.
- Follow the audit’s recommendations. Start with the cheapest suggestion or one that you know is needed. Low-income assistance is available; see http://www.getenergysmart.org.
- Install low-impact landscaping that needs less water.
- Plant a tree to absorb CO2.
- Buy less, and buy local — shipping from distant sources releases CO2.
